What is iCloud "Family Sharing"?

Through Family Sharing, Apple gives you the ability to share apps, movies, music (an Apple Music family subscription), an iCloud storage plan, and more.

This feature allows you to share purchases from iTunes, AppleBooks and App Store, up to six members of the family, however, your family or friends must have an iCloud account from the same country as yours, otherwise, the person you want to add to the share will have to change the account/country and as a result, they will lose subscriptions and purchases - which is still a somewhat complex process for those who have family members abroad with accounts in that country.

Family members can also share a photo album, calendar, reminders, and even help locate other members' lost devices.

How to configure?

You can use Family Sharing on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 8 or later, on your Mac with OS X Yosemite or later and iTunes 12, or on your PC with iCloud for Windows.< span class="Apple-converted-space">

  • On iPhone, iPad or iPod touch: go to Settings > [your name]. Then click Set Up Family Sharing > Introduction and follow the steps displayed on the screen. If you have iOS 10.2 or earlier, go to Settings > iCloud > Set up Family Sharing and follow the on-screen steps.
  • On a Mac, in the menu bar, click Apple (?) > System Preferences > iCloud, click Set Up Family and follow the steps on the screen.
