Journée mondiale du cerveau

July 22nd marks World Brain Day. The date comes with the aim of raising awareness of the importance of the brain in the quality of human life. Firstly, it is essential to clarify that the concept of quality of life is very comprehensive. It encompasses not only physical health but also psychological well-being, the level of independence, interpersonal relationships and even contact with the environment.

But how can the brain interfere with quality of life?

The current reality has raised awareness of the importance of health in our well-being. And, despite the current pandemic context, when it comes to health, there are two issues that should not be forgotten .

First, don't forget that in addition to Covid-19, there are also other diseases. Therefore, you must ensure a health routine that prevents and contributes to the maintenance of a healthy lifestyle. Along with frequent exams and screenings, the following are essential: regular exercise, a balanced diet, a adequate hydration, as well as restorative rest...

Secondly, avoid the mistake of seeing health only as physical well-being. According to the World Health Organization, this concept translates into complete physical, mental and social well-being .

The pandemic context has contributed to the worsening of mental and social problems. According to a survey carried out by Academic Associations and Federations nationwide, around 55% of higher education students had a worsening of their mental health status due to Covid-19. Despite these figures, this is an issue that needs attention, as it is still viewed by the majority in a prejudiced and ignorant way.

Currently, more and more people feel that their mental health is at risk. High professional and personal expectations are often at the root of the problem. The incessant need for perfection, productivity and cohesion leads to aincompatibility between capabilities and ambitions, which leads to a worsening of discomfort and the appearance of complications that previously did not exist.

Being mentally ill is not a sign of weakness or inferiority!

Like any other illness, mental illnesses also require specialized treatment and monitoring. It is essential to seek help. Knowing how to recognize when there is a problem is the first step to overcoming it and preventing similar future situations. Stress, panic and social anxiety are common and should not be devalued or ignored.

There are crucial strategies and habits when it comes to prevention. Knowing how to organize your time and energy avoids avoiding commitments and obligations, ensuring the achievement of goals and objectives - which must always remain realistic. Learning to rest, reflect, meditate and take a break from the hectic pace of everyday life is the beginning of the path to balance.

Thus, World Brain Day invites us to reflect on the importance of being attentive and aware. Taking care of ourselves and those around us is a form of prevention. Being an agent of change is a role that belongs to everyone and that starts with information!
