My iPhone Fell in the Water. Now What?

My iPhone Fell in the Water. Now What?

Since version 7 of the iPhone, it has been resistant to splashes of water and dust, however, this resistance is not permanent and may reduce with normal wear and tear.

Apple makes it very clear that damage caused by liquids is not covered by the warranty, despite the device having received the IP 67 rating of the IEC 60529 standard, which means that the device has been proven to have complete protection against dust and protection against water whenever you immerse it (maximum) up to one meter for half an hour. After this limit, water may enter, although there is no reason for this to happen.

But what if the iPhone falls into the water? What should I do?

Apple recommends that you first disconnect any cables and accessories connected to your iPhone and try turning off the device. You should clean with a soft, lint-free cloth (for example, a lens cleaning cloth) and gently touch it to the palm of your hand, making sure the Lightning port is facing downwards, thus removing the liquid in excess. After drying the outside of the iPhone, open the SIM card drawer and repeat the previous process, this time leaving the SIM card slot facing down.

Never use a hairdryer or try to insert foreign objects into the iPhone, such as cotton swabs, pieces of cotton or paper napkins. However, you can use a fan to blow cool air toward the Lightning connector, which may dry it out more effectively.

Also avoid immersing the device in bowls of rice, wheat, sago, or any other type of grain in order to try to absorb moisture from the iPhone. In this case, the ideal would be to use silica gel packs. Silica gel is what comes in small packages, along with many electronic items in order to absorb water, but it would be necessary to gather a sufficient amount to surround the smartphone, which ends up being neither practical nor cheap.

Apple recommends waiting 5 hours before trying to charge your device or connect a Lightning accessory. Just in case, I wouldn't risk trying any procedure before waiting a whole day. It is better to err on the side of excess zeal than a lack of it.

In the case of dust or dirt on the iPhone, it is only recommended to clean it with the same type of cloth described previously, that is, one that does not release hair. Make sure your iPhone is completely clean before opening the SIM tray, and never use cleaning products or compressed air on the device.

Happy cleaning!
